In Texas, an LPC Associate may only provide counseling services under the supervision of a Board-approved supervisor and is not permitted to practice independently.
Basic licensure requirements for LPC Associate include a graduate degree in counseling (or a related field) from an accredited university, successful completion of the National Counseling Exam (NCE) or National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE), the LPC Jurisprudence Exam, and a completed fingerprint background check.
Required Documentation for LPC Associate Online Application:
BEFORE accessing the Online Licensing System, ensure you have the following documents completed and scanned for be attachment to your electronic application.
- Practicum Documentation Form – Completed by a faculty or administrative member of your counseling program and returned to you for inclusion in your application.
- Jurisprudence Examination Completion Certificate – You must take and pass the Texas LPC Jurisprudence Exam before submitting your application. The exam must be completed within six months prior to submitting your application. A certificate will be issued upon completion.
- Supervisory Agreement Form – Completed and signed by both you and your board-approved supervisor.
Additional Documents to be Submitted by Third Parties (Cannot Be Uploaded with Your Application):
- NCE/NCMHCE Scores – If you completed the NCE or NCMHCE outside of Texas, please request that NBCC send your scores directly to our office. For exam registration, contact NBCC at https://www.nbcc.org/licensure/examregistration. NBCC will forward your verification to our office within 6-8 weeks after testing.
- National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) self-query report – You may submit an official electronic version, or request a copy from the NPDB, which will be mailed to you. The unopened copy must then be forwarded to us. For more information on the NPDB self-query, please refer to the details here.
- Fingerprinting – After submitting your application, you will receive instructions for electronic fingerprinting. Fingerprinting locations are available nationwide, with a fee paid directly to the fingerprint facility. The process typically takes around 15 minutes.
- Official Transcripts – Official transcripts must be sent directly to the board (cannot be uploaded with your application). We prefer electronic transcripts but will accept hard copies.
