The Council issues three types of licenses for the practice of psychology:
- Licensed Psychologist (LP)
- Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)
- Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) (also known as a School Psychologist)

Types of Applications Available for Psychology
Licensed Psychologist – This application is for individuals applying for an initial license to practice as psychologist in the State of Texas. This application is for individuals seeking to sit for the EPPP and are requesting a provisional license, or for individuals that are licensed in another jurisdiction.
Licensed Psychological Associate – This application is for individuals seeking initial licensure as a licensed psychological associate in the State of Texas.
Licensed Specialist in School Psychology – This application is for individuals seeking initial licensure as a school psychologist in the State of Texas.
Request for Issuance of Psychologist License – This application is for individuals who already hold or have held a Texas license as a Licensed Psychologist with Provisional Status, have completed the EPPP and supervised experience requirements, and are applying for issuance of license to practice as psychologist in Texas.
Reciprocity Application – Oklahoma – This application is for licensed psychologists who hold an active Oklahoma license and who want to apply for a Texas psychologist license.
Temporary License – A temporary license allows out-of-state active licensed, certified, or registered psychologists or psychological associate to practice for a limited time and purpose, such as to provide transitional care or conduct court-ordered evaluations. Applicants are granted a temporary license authorizing the delivery of psychological services for no more than 30 days during the course of a year. Texas does not offer a temporary license for School Psychologist.
Reinstatement Application – This application is for individuals who previously held a renewable license to practice psychology in Texas at any time. Instructions for submitting an application for reinstatement can be found on the Council’s How-To User Guides webpage.

Helpful Information
- If you do not have an account on the Online Licensing System, you will need to create have to create one order to apply.
- Following submission and payment of your application, you will receive an email confirming your submission and payment. Once you have submitted your application you cannot make any changes to your application.
- The email confirming receipt of your application will contain instructions regarding completion onf your fingerprint background check.
- Failure to pay the required application fee will result in automatic expiration of your application after 30 days. Fees may be waived for certain qualified military service.
- Failure to supply all required application information may result in denial of the application.
- If your application remains incomplete 90 days from the date it is received, your application will be closed.
- Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are received. Due to heavy volume, it may take up to six weeks for staff to contact you regarding your application. Please respond to any request for additional information you receive from staff in order to facilitate completion of your application.
- In the event you have not heard from the agency after six weeks of submitting your application, you may contact agency staff to check on your status by using the Contact Us form or emailing psychology@bhec.texas.gov.
