NEW PRAXIS EXAM – School Psychologists

A new Praxis School Psychologist exam will be available beginning September 1, 2022 to align with the NASP 2020 Professional Standards.

What does this mean for anyone you know that plans to take the exam?

The current exam (Exam #5402), with a qualifying score of 147, will be available through August 31, 2023.
The new exam (#5403), with a qualifying score of 155, will be available beginning September 1, 2022. In other words, for an entire year from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023, individuals will have a choice which version of the exam they wish to take, to accommodate those that have already begun their exam preparation.

Why is the passing score different? Does this mean the exam is more difficult?

The Praxis cut score is created using the Angoff method – an expert judgement process that included school psychology professionals from around the country. Each version of the exam, with its own set of questions and unique passing score, can not be directly compared to others. Therefore, a different cut score does not mean the exam has become more difficult. This process was completed by the Educational Testing Service. NASP accepted the recommendation made by ETS.

Where can I find more information?

You can find more information about each exam on the ETS website. Interactive practice tests are also available. https://www.ets.org/praxis/prepare/materials/5403
