Renewing an LPC License

In addition to the General Requirements for renewing a license, licensed professional counselors must follow Board Rule 22 TAC 681.140 (See our Statutes and Rules webpage).

LPC Associate licenses expired 60 months from the date of issuance and cannot be renewed. Associates who do not complete the required supervised experience hours during the 60-month time period must reapply for licensure.

Licensed Professional Counselors are required to obtain a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education during each renewal period they hold a license.

Effective January 1, 2024, at least half of the 24 hours must be obtained from a provider listed in 681.140(f).

At least 6 of the hours obtained must be in the area of ethics, with another 3 hours in the area of distinct populations and competency. These hours may be counted toward the total number of hours required.

LPCs must pass the jurisprudence examination each renewal period.  Licensees may claim 1 hour of ethics credit for passing the examination.

An LPC Supervisor must complete 6 hours of continuing education in supervision during his or her renewal period to maintain supervisory status.  These hours may be counted toward the total number of hours required.

Please refer to the How to User Guides webpage for detailed instructions on how to renew a license using the online licensing system.

Planned System Outage – Online Licensing Unavailable

Please be advised that the Council’s online licensing system will be unavailable on May 1, 2026, from 12:00 AM to 1:00 AM (CDT) due to a scheduled maintenance window for SnapPay, the State of Texas’ payment portal used to process online transactions.

During this time, you will not be able to submit applications, renew licenses, or make any payments through the system.

This outage is particularly important given that a high volume of licensees typically attempt to complete renewals at the end of the month. If your license is set to expire on April 30, 2026, you are strongly encouraged to complete your renewal in advance of the outage to avoid any interruption in licensure status.

Please note:

  • Late renewals caused by attempting to transact during the outage will not result in a waiver of late fees.
  • The system will resume normal operations after the maintenance window concludes at 1:00 AM CDT on May 1.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and encourage you to plan accordingly to avoid any disruption.
