Application to Request AMFTRB Exam Authorization Code

A person must apply for Texas’ approval before registering with the Association of Marital & Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) to sit for the AMFTRB national licensing exam.

Texas allows MFT students to sit for the AMFTRB exam while still in school. Most students wait until their final semester to attempt the exam to ensure they are fully prepared.

See the Council’s How To User Guide webpage for

Then, use the Council’s Online License/Renewal System to submit the application.

The system will send you a confirmation email that includes your “exam authorization code.” You may immediately use that authorization code to register for and schedule the exam at AMFTRB.org. Using this exam code allows AMFTRB to automatically release your exam score to Texas staff.

Passing the national exam is only the first part of the licensure process. After you have passed the AMFTRB exam, you must apply for MFT license, including fee and all required documents. You must first receive a license from the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council before you may begin providing services, even under supervision. See Applying for LMFT Associate.

Additional Information

AMFTRB releases all scores for exams taken within a particular month on or about the 10th of the following month. For example, if you sit for the exam on January 1 or on January 31, staff will not be able to access your exam score until at least February 10 – or later if the number of exams taken in a month is higher than average.

You may attempt the AMFTRB exam no more than three times before additional action is required. You may not sit for the AMFTRB exam again until you have submitted a detailed study plan designed to address the known or suspected areas of deficiency. The study plan must be approved by the MFT board (or its designee) before you register for a new AMFTRB Exam attempt. See the MFT Board’s Forms and Publications webpage for the Rule 882.6 Study Plan form.
